Real life story

Life Before
Comfortable, though somehow neither happy nor unhappy. Not particularly challenging, a strong though underlying sense of security and of where things were going. A singular focus on music that not only formed the basis of a long relationship but of my own identity. Also a sense of inwardness and carrying on as before, because ones identity is somehow fixed.

What Happened
The relationship ended, signalling a letting go of many things- both physically and in terms of perspective. The negotiation of a proper friendship with my ex (which was very difficult to achieve but essential for me to salvage after 15 years), letting go of the house and the security it represented, and somehow a letting go of the feeling that I am defined by my music. All of this was somehow accentuated by both parents becoming seriously ill in the same period.

Life Now
Certainly feels harder, but I have reached for new things such as comedy and writing, which I love, made new friends and cemented the friendship with my ex. The new projects are extremely fulfilling, and though I am much less obsessive about music, when I do play now it is much more enjoyable than it has been for a long time. Somehow I no longer feel the sense of ambition/pressure I once had about it. I still feel a sense of ‘free fall’ about where I am, because I really don’t know what I’m doing, but I have begun to embrace it.
