Real life story

I had thought that in the main, the direction of my life; the fabric of it, was in my own hands. Decision and action would cast me along a pathway of consequences which I could plan and map out. Things were going well, I was happy, I had dreams and no reason to imagine they would not be realised.

Unexpectedly, (when is it expected?), I found that my body could turn on itself, the hopes and dreams I’d cherished hung on this fragile frame. And all in a moment; pain, a hospital gown, the voice of a doctor, I saw that control was only and always an illusion.

Every day requires adaptation; the ability to change, to listen and respond to more than just my own will. My days are walked in submission, surrender and yet I am not my sickness; not just an apology for who I might be. My boundaries give me space to breathe in a recklessly busy world and I have come to accept this acquaintance with my limitations while others pity me oblivious of their own frailty.
